Author Interview - John Pendleton

What is your writing process like?

I produce a basic plot and story and then add layers of description, characterisation and thought.

How do you come up with ideas for stories and characters?

My ideas for stories come partly from my imagination and partly from my experience of the real world. Some of my characters are based on an amalgam of various people I have encountered, whereas others are purely conceived in my head.

What do the words “writer’s block” mean to you?

I sometimes find that a plot isn't working properly, so I have to stop writing and think about how to make changes.

How do you process and deal with negative book reviews?

So long as most reviews are positive I can accept that my work will not appeal to everyone and move on.

What is the most challenging part of your writing process?

I enjoy storytelling and am happy to write about actions, dialogue and philosophical ideas. Describing scenes in detail can be the most challenging part of the process for me.

How long have you been writing, or when did you start?

I have been writing as a journalist for the whole of my adult life, but began writing novels about 15 years ago.

How many books have you written, and which is your favorite?

I have written three novels and one non-fiction book. My favourite novel is my latest, a tale of romance and mystery entitled "Hector's Revenge".

What inspired the idea for your book?

A schoolboy crush I had for a girl. I imagined what might have happened if that relationship had developed.

If you could spend a day with another popular author, whom would you choose?

Michael Frayn.
